Sports Funding
Primary School PE and Sports Funding
The government has provided additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013 on wards in order to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school headteachers.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools and is monitored by our Governing body.
At St Bridget’s, Sport and being active is something we have always placed a great emphasis on. Our children have rich and varied opportunities to take part in sport for fun, personal achievement and development, physical development and competition.
We are extremely well resourced and our teachers are trained to a high standard. Teachers and coaches who deliver PE in Curriculum time, and who facilitate extra curricular sporting opportunities, are passionate about what they do and help our children to achieve in all areas of sport and physical activity.

We currently hold a Silver Kitemark Award for the range and quality of sports we provide. All of our children take part in daily activities and a high proportion take part in sporting events after school as well as represent our school at competition level.

Children from Year 1 to Year 6 receive swimming lessons and by the end of Year 6 100% of all our children can swim 25 meters unaided and can use a range of strokes effectively.
However, there are always ways we can improve our provision and practice. The additional Sports and PE Funding is helping us to :
- Use specialist coaches to work with groups of children
- Use specialist coaches to work alongside teaching staff to improve their skills and knowledge
- Provide professional development opportunities for teachers- eg. Cricket, Dance etc
- Employ specialists for afterschool clubs to offer a wider variety
- Subsidise transport costs to fixtures and competitions
- 'Buy into' the local schools partnership for sport- ensuring value for money and provide competition
- Purchase equipment and resources to enhance our teaching and learning in this area
- Ensure children are aware of the importance of being healthy and how daily exercise can support this.
- Enhance enjoyment levels by offering specialised teaching and a wider range of activiites.
- Provide swimming lessons for children of all ages
- Subsidise Outdoor & Adventurous Activities for all age groups
