Welcome to Class 4!
A few key points about being a member of Class 4
Reading:
◦ Children will be able to continue to access Accelerated Reader.
◦ The aim is to try and become a reading millionaire by the end of the year.
◦ Some books do not have a quiz, so when the children come across these, we encourage them to let us know so that we can contact AR and they will then look into creating one.
◦ We read daily in school – this can either be individually or in guided groups.
◦ We use the reciprocal reading format in our group and whole class teaching
◦ A member of staff will read 1:1 with your child every 2 weeks.
Writing:
◦ Writing is not just limited to English lessons – writing will occur across the whole curriculum.
◦ Writing in Class four is focused on a ‘Sentence Stacking’ approach.
◦ In Class 4, we really focus on writing as a process: draft, edit, develop, finish – with many jumps back to edit!
◦ Where possible, we try to link writing to real life purposes.
Maths:
◦ We follow the Whiterose scheme of maths and this will be taught in groups or whole class.
◦ We apply our knowledge through weekly Active Maths activities, usually on a Friday.
P.E:
◦ We participate in P.E at least twice a week – during Autumn term the sessions will usually take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
◦ We also have visiting sports coaches– Information about when they are visiting is displayed on the PE page on the school website.
◦ Ideally, a P.E kit should be brought into school on Monday and stay all week due to our Active 30 sessions.
◦ Sometimes the weather impacts on our P.E and we may have a last minute switch around of sessions so that we can still have a great session.
◦ Schools are responsible for delivering 30 active minutes, outside of P.E, every day as part of Active 60 (the remaining 30 is expected to come from home).
◦ To meet this target we will start to introduce our daily run/jog/walk and follow a variety of online sessions throughout the day involving activities such as squats, lunges, balancing and skipping.
Homework:
◦ Children will be set times tables and spellings on a weekly basis – in September we will be starting a new spelling scheme called Jolly Grammar that links to the work that the infants have been doing.
◦ The weekly times tables schedule will be displayed on the class page on the website shortly.
◦ Spellings will be given out on paper and will also be taught through phonic sessions during the week leading up to the test.
◦ Spelling tests will take place on Thursdays.
◦ Multiplication challenges will take place on Friday mornings.
◦ Any other extra activities will be distributed in physical paper form and I have attached a copy of the Homework Plan for the year.
Five to Thrive:
◦ We have a weekly reading target of reading five times a week outside of school
◦ Record is kept in a red reading record and each read is signed by an adult at home or in kids club at school.
◦ On Monday morning, the reads are counted up for the previous week and 5 reads results in a stamp and a raffle ticket entry to the Book Voucher draw.
◦ We will draw the raffle at the end of each half term with the prizes being handed out at the end of the year.
Sport Teams
◦ Sporting events take place at Cockermouth School throughout the year.
◦ These are on Thursdays.
◦ Children will either be selected or asked to volunteer depending on the activity.
◦ The dates are on the PE page of the school website.
◦ We require parental assistance to attend these events and assist with transport. We leave school around 12.45pm and return at 3pm – please let us know if you can help.
Trips:
◦ We are in the process of arranging quotes for a residential and will share more information as it becomes available

Many thanks, Rachel Willan Class Teacher
In PSHE class 4 have been looking at what it means and feels like to be a refugee. They used the Christian Aid Refugee game to understand what it feels like to escape your country for conflict or persecution. As they moved around the Ludo style board game trying to get to safety, they were presented with the difficulties they would face, such as leaving their family/belongings behind, cultural and language barriers, dangerous and unwelcoming places. They were also shown kindness and humility and were made aware of how important this was to them and how grateful they were of the help from others in order to get to their safe destinations in the hope of building a new life.
Class 4 have been looking at Children's rights in PSHE and we looked at how The Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has launched The Big Ambition, a national survey of children and young people across England.
The Big Ambition aims to hear from children across England on what they think is important! In the lead up to the next General Election, the Children’s Commissioner wants to take children’s thoughts, opinions and ideas to decision-makers, to make sure that the Government hears young people’s voices on what they think needs to be done to make children’s lives better in England.
Class 4 were very eager to have their views heard, I think we have some future politicians in our class!
If any other children want to take part the closing date is Friday 15th december 2023. Just click on the link below :
