St Bridget’s CE Primary School _ Religious Education

St Bridget's CE Primary School is a Voluntary Controlled school and we follow the Cumbrian Local Agreed Syllabus

Intent

Our RE curriculum is intended to offer a broad and rich RE curriculum to allow for a variety of ways to explore different religions, communities and personal development and wellbeing. Through the units, children will know about and understand a range of religions and world views. They will be able to identify, investigate and respond to a variety of issues.

Planned opportunities for SMSC, personal growth and community cohesion allow children to develop positive attitudes and values by reflecting on and relating their learning in RE to their own experiences. The intent is to make sure that children understand the relevance of RE in today’s modern world and how it affects our lives.

Implementation

St Bridget’s CE Primary School uses the Blackburn and Lancashire Diocesan Board of Education’s Questful RE scheme to deliver our agreed syllabus. This is taught on a two year rolling programme to support mixed aged classes. The scheme is enhanced and brought to life by educational visits and visitors to school, good quality artefacts and on line resources.  RE is also linked to our school’s collective worship themes on values which involve the whole school community. As a church school, Christianity is also strongly supported by our local churches working together for Brigham providing valuable experience days linked to major festivals in the church calendar.

Impact

Appropriate to age, at the end of their education in our church school the expectation is that all pupils are religiously literate and (as a minimum)they are able to:

  • Give a theologically informed and thoughtful account of Christianity as a living and diverse faith.
  • Show an informed and respectful attitude to religions and worldviews in their search for God and meaning.
  • Reflect critically and responsibly on their own spiritual, philosophical and ethical convictions
  • Engage in meaningful and informed dialogue with those of other faiths and none.

The curriculum content is a balance of the three essential disciplines of quality RE, Theology, Philosophy and Human Social Science.

Reception and Special Places

In our RE Clever Club visited our classroom and told us about his special places . ( following on from us talking about and drawing our own special places last week ). He brought his photo album and showed us Allonby beach and St Bridget’s church where he likes to go with his family . He even brought a toy church for us to play with. He then showed us different churches around the world which Christians go to, to say their prayers and think about God and Jesus.  After this we looked at different people who said prayers to different Gods who they believed in and used Hats of Faith Book to talk about Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and Jewish people  . We then wondered where they went to say their prayers ? Did they go to St Bridget’s church too? Clever Club helped us out by showing us in his Photo Album where he had been on holiday and visited different places people go to pray like Mosques , Synagogue etc we had fun spotting Clever Cub in the picture too. Finally we matched the people from Hats of Faith Book to the different special places.

Reception children love exploring the 'chatterbox' which is a hook to stimulate talk and discussions- this half term all about the Easter story.

Reception and Easter Story

Washing our friends feet and enjoying a version of The Last Supper. In class 1 we have been looking at the Easter story .  After the initial sharing of The Easter story Clever Cub visited us to tell us about the story in more detail. We then had great fun using props and LEGO people as Jesus and his disciples to re-enact the events.  Then we watched a video clip of the last supper . We learnt about how in the bible times people often had dirty feet from walking on dusty roads in their sandals. People would wash their feet before going into people’s houses . Jesus washed his disciples feet as an example of kindness and love and asked them to follow in his footsteps . We then had a giggle as Mrs Hemingway washed Grayson’s feet and the children took it in turns to wash each other’s feet.  We then sat at our tables in a line and pretended to be Jesus and his disciples eating the bread and wine ( juice) to remember Jesus’ body. The children chose Grayson as Jesus as he was sitting in the middle .
