An introduction to our Summer 1 term 'In my garden'. We looked carefully at the tiny pansy plants - naming the different parts - roots, stem, leaves, flower head and petals. We then planted them gently into the pots filled with compost.
Developing an understanding of different occupations. Finn's daddy kindly offered to come into school to tell us all about his job as a mountain guide. He showed us some beautiful photos of parts of the world he had explored. The children got to handle his gear and equipment. Thank you Matt from Lakeland Mountain Guides for a super visit.
While learning about the Hindu festival Divali the children created divas from clay. Why divas ? Making a thumb pot diva helped the children remember how when Rama rescued his princess Sita from the wicked Ravenna - their friends and neighbours lit little lamps to help guide them home. Divali is also known as the Festival of light.
Our Windrush Boats - as part of our theme week we embraced our love of Jo Jo and Gran Gran and introduced our Reception children to the Windrush Generation. We learnt Gran Gran had travelled to England from St Lucia. We looked at images of the boats and from this the children created their own boats from junk. They practised their joining skills using making tape.
Cuddling our chicks - we loved helping incubating the eggs and had to be super patient as it took 21 sleeps. Ruby's daddy, Ben, helped a lot. Once they arrived we loved giving them cuddles - feeling their delicate bones and finding out their beaks and feet weren't as sharp as we thought.
A snow day at our school field - one snowy morning in February Mrs Hemingway suggested a snow day - all our families were asked to dress the children up warmly and bring any sledges they had. We had a ball - the older children pulled our younger ones around on sledges, snowmen were built and snow balls thrown.
Visiting Zoe's farm to see new born lambs. We are lucky enough to have a farm in the village that welcomes us each year to see the maternity barn. We saw lots of new born lambs, got to cuddle them too as well as bottle feed. We were even lucky enough to see a couple born this year.
A visit from two dental nurses from Derwent Dental practice. We spent a lovely afternoon learning how to brush our teeth properly and what foods are kind to our teeth and which foods to eat now and again. A special thanks to everyone at DDP in Cockermouth.
Making bird feeders - we shared lots of stories and non fiction texts about what happens to birds in the winter. We found out some migrate while others stay here. We then set about making some bird feeders - in doing so we learnt about melting and solidifying.
